The Guest of Honour Pavilion at the Buchmesse Frankfurt 2023
As the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023, Slovenia presented one of the most significant international showcases of its literature and culture. Following its winning entry in a public competition, Studio Sadar designed the 2,400 sqm national pavilion, serving as the central venue for Slovenia’s cultural programme at the fair. The project draws inspiration from the motto Honeycomb of Words, reflecting the exchange of ideas and the intertwining of cultural influences that have shaped Slovenia’s position at the crossroads of diverse European landscapes and linguistic traditions.
The pavilion is conceived as a spatial landscape of reflected words, bringing together architecture, design, literature, and cultural heritage into a unified experience. Semi-transparent auditoriums, forest-like bookshelves, and elements inspired by canyons and the varied Slovenian terrain create a sequence of spaces for reading, gathering, and exploration. Natural light, sustainable materials, and reusable components emphasize a commitment to responsible design while presenting Slovenia as a green, creative, and culturally open country.
